State of mind: CPC Chairman Tai Chein welcomes a delegation from New Mexico

Aug 30, 2018

In the afternoon of June 28 this year, CPC Chairman Tai Chein received a visit from Susana Martinez, Governor of the state of New Mexico in the USA, and her delegation. The state has vast natural gas and mineral resources and her meeting with Mr. Tai was chiefly aimed at establishing an energy-based, cooperative trading relationship in the near future.

Governor Martinez is the first Hispanic woman to occupy a gubernatorial mansion in the United States. Her delegation on this particular occasion, given the focus on cooperation in the field of energy, was composed of New Mexico state government officials and included Keith Gardner, her chief of staff; Matt Geisel, Cabinet Secretary for the Department of Economic Development ; and Ken McQueen, Cabinet Secretary for the Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources. The state’s delegation as a whole had previously met with President Tsai Ing-wen and a number of senior officials from the central government.

Chairman Tai’s wholehearted welcome for Governor Martinez and her colleagues included an exchange of souvenir gifts and a photo opportunity. In discussion, Chairman Tai took note of  New Mexico’s wealth of natural gas and mineral resources and that in 2016 it was the 9th largest producer of natural gas out of the USA’S 52 states – adding up to a 5% share of national natural gas production that confirmed it as a key player. He further voiced his expectation of more frequent and deeper exchanges between the two sides following this visit and, in the near future, the beginning of cooperative energy trading.
